Nicotine Pouches 101: ZYN, On!, Velo and Rogue, Explained by People Who Use Them
Pouches went from a corner of the shop to a whole wall in two years. Here's why, and how to pick the right one the first time.
Two years ago we kept a few cans of ZYN by the register for the handful of people who asked. Today pouches are a wall, and the people buying them are everybody: oilfield guys who can't vape on site, nurses, people in the truck all day, former dippers who got tired of spitting, and a lot of vapers who just want something for the places they can't vape. If you've never tried one, here's the honest rundown.
What a pouch actually is
A nicotine pouch is a small white packet of plant fiber, nicotine, flavoring and a little moisture. You tuck it between your upper lip and gum, leave it there for 20 to 45 minutes, and the nicotine absorbs through the gum tissue. Then you throw it away. No tobacco leaf, no smoke, no vapor, no spitting, no smell. That's the whole appeal.
They are not the same as dip or snus. Dip is cut tobacco; snus is a tobacco pouch. Nicotine pouches contain no tobacco at all, which is why they don't stain teeth the way dip does and why they're allowed in a lot of places dip isn't.
How it compares to vaping
- Speed. Vaping hits in seconds. A pouch takes a few minutes to get going and then delivers steadily for half an hour or more. Some people find that smoother; some miss the quick hit.
- Strength. Pouch milligrams are not the same as vape milligrams. A 6mg pouch feels strong. Most new users should start at 3mg or 4mg even if they vape 50mg salt nic.
- Where you can use it. Anywhere. Work, meetings, flights, your mother-in-law's living room.
- Cost. A can of 15 to 20 pouches runs less than most disposables and lasts a moderate user two or three days.
The brands, in plain terms
| Brand | Feel | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| ZYN | Medium-moisture, slim, mild tingle. 3mg and 6mg. | The default first pouch. Most people start here. |
| On! | Small, dry, fast-dissolving. 2mg to 8mg. | People who find ZYN too wet or too big, or who want it discreet. |
| Velo | Soft, moist, lots of flavors. 4mg to 7mg. | Flavor-first users and anyone who likes a softer pouch. |
| Rogue | Bigger pouch, bold flavor, strengths up to 12mg. | Former dippers and heavy nicotine users who need more. |
Rookie mistakes
Starting too strong. Nausea, hiccups and a sweaty headache mean the pouch is too much. Drop a strength and give it a week.
Chewing or sucking on it. Just leave it. Moving it around releases nicotine faster and burns your gum.
Same spot every time. Rotate sides. Your gums will thank you.
Swallowing the drip. A little is unavoidable. A lot means the pouch is too wet or too strong for you; try a drier brand like On!.
Leaving it in for an hour. Most of the nicotine is gone by 40 minutes. Longer just irritates the gum.
Is it "safe"?
Nicotine is addictive, full stop, and we don't sell pouches as a health product. What we'll say is that for an adult who already uses nicotine, a tobacco-free pouch avoids the combustion of a cigarette and the tobacco of dip, and that's a meaningful difference. If you don't use nicotine today, the best pouch is none.
